Oxford: Town in the University?!

There is a town in the University of Oxford

This post is the report of the University of Oxford which is one of the world's leading universities and one of the world's oldest universities.

[THERE IS A TOWN IN THE UNIVERSITY of OXFORD?]

By the way, the site of the University of Oxford does not mean that there is fixed certain area. If you visit Oxford, you cannot say 'Which is the university of Oxford?.' I think that image is different from universities in Japan. Universities in Japan have campuses in which there are buildings of faculties and libraries and so on. Unlike in the case of universities in Japan, Oxford does not have campuses. But there are a lot of buildings of the university, like colleges, libraries etc. 

For example, if you walk down the street, you can look restaurants and bookstores, next to "~~College", "~~ Church". A building seems to be an apartment, the sign in front of the apartment indicates "Institute of ~, The University of Oxford ".

Such universities as University of Oxford are called "College University College University is called ".This probably distinguishes the universities from universities in Japan. Incidentally, the university, such as universities in Japan, are called "Campus University."  (Of course, there are many campus universities in the UK.)

Both University of Oxford and the city have been developed. It is said that the beginning of University of Oxford dates back to the 13th century. Speaking in Japan, the age was the Kamakura period. Roughly, at that time, Daibutsu (a statue of Buddha) was built in Kamakura. Since the teachers and students moved to this land from Paris in France, and the city and the university have developed together. 

It is said that the beginning of European universities is traced back the voluntary activities of research and education by teachers and students who love study. However, it may not work with the university and the city, some of the people of the university moved to another place and started a new research and educational activities. In so doing, universities spread throughout various parts of Europe.

From University of Paris, France to Oxford. From the University of Oxford to Cambridge...

And from complex relationship between the city and the university, it has been called "Town and Gown." Gown is clothe such as cloak. Gown is worn  by teachers and students at official events

From the next time, I want to up the posts focus on Oxford.

オックスフォード～大学の中に街がある～

今回の記事は、世界最古の大学の一つ、そして世界有数の大学であるオックスフォード大学のあるオックスフォードの報告です。

【大学の中に街がある?!】

ところで、このオックスフォード、行ってみても、オックスフォード大学という一定の範囲の大学の敷地が決まっているわけではありません。日本の大学はキャンパスがあって、大学の建物がその中にあるというイメージかと思います。ところがこのオックスフォード、日本の大学のようにキャンパスというものはなく、街のあちらこちらに、大学の建物があります。

たとえば、街を歩いていると、レストランや本屋さんがあると思いきや、その隣は、「～～カレッジ」「～～チャーチ」だったりします。アパートかと思いきや、立て看板をみると「オックスフォード大学～～研究所」とあったりします。このような具合です。

オックスフォードのような大学は、「カレッジ・ユニバーシティCollege University」と呼ばれます。 これは、日本の大学のような大学と区別するものと思われます。ちなみに、日本の大学のような大学は、「キャンパス・ユニバーシティCampus University」と呼ばれます。 （もちろんイギリスにもキャンパス・ユニバーシティはたくさんあります）

【タウンとガウン?!】

「大学の中に街がある」　というのも、オックスフォードは街と大学とがともに発展してきたからです。オックスフォード大学のはじまりは13世紀に遡ると言われています。日本でいえば、鎌倉時代。だいたい、鎌倉に大仏ができたころでしょうか。フランスのパリ大学の教師や学生らがこの地に移ってきて以来、大学と街とがともに発展してきたようです。


ヨーロッパの大学は、学問を愛する教師と学生とが集まり、研究・教育活動を自主的に行ったのがその始まりと言われます。ただ、大学と街とはしばしばうまくいかないことがあり、大学の人々のなかには、他の地に移る人々がいました。そしてまた新たな研究・教育活動を始める…。こうして大学がヨーロッパの各地に広がっていくわけです。

フランスのパリ大学からイギリスのオックスフォードへ。オックスフォード大学から同じくイギリスのケンブリッジへ…。

大学と街とが複雑に関係していることから、大学と街とは「タウンtownとガウンgown」と呼びならわされます。ガウンというのは、オックスフォード大学等の教師・学生が公式行事のときに身につけるマントのような服です。


次回以降、このオックスフォードを中心に記事をアップしていきたいと思います。

Hyde Park

This post is about Hyde Park where the people of London spend their time in relax.

In the pond in Hyde Park, swans were swimming gracefully.

Over the Hyde Park, the plane was flying well. It may be due to relatively close to Heathrow Airport. In addition, from all over the world airplanes might be gathered in London, airplanes might fly to many parts of the world.

Kensington Palace is of the royal family of England. Travelers can enter into the palace. In the grass around the palace, local people relaxed and students made merry.

ハイドパークの昼さがり

今回の記事は、ロンドンの人々の憩いの場所、ハイドパークです。

ハイドパーク内の池では、白鳥が優雅に泳いでいました。

ハイドパークの上空は、よく飛行機が飛んでいました。 ヒースロー空港に比較的近いせいかもしれませんね。世界中からロンドンに集まり、また、世界中へと旅立っていく飛行機たちでしょうか。

イギリス王室のケンジントン宮殿です。宮殿内は公開されていました。宮殿の周りの芝では、地元の方がくつろいだり、修学旅行生がはしゃいだりしていました。

The British Library

This post is about the British Library. Every book was published in the United Kingdom has been gathered to the British Library. Speaking in Japan, the National Diet Library takes the role.

The British Library

The British Library will be able to be entered by tourists freely. (However, If you want to enter Reading Room. You need special permission.) Entering the library with suite case is prohibited can, however, on the security, enters with a carry case is prohibited because of security concerns. Also, if you are carrying a rucksack, you will be checked the contents.

In the library, they have a little cafe, so you can focus on your study all day. Actually, when I visited the library, various people from high school and university students up to people of old age use the library.

Incidentally, the image of a person with a compass in the pages of the study of the British Council Web Site is located in the British Library.

大英図書館

今回の記事は大英図書館についてです。大英図書館には、イギリスで出版されたあらゆる書籍がおさめられています。日本でいえば、国立国会図書館といったところでしょうか。

大英図書館

大英図書館には観光客でも自由に入ることができます。（閲覧室は別に許可が必要。）ただし、セキュリティー上、キャリーケースを持って入ることは禁じられています。また、リュックサックを背負っている場合、中身をチェックされることもあります。

中には、ちょっとしたカフェが入っていて、一日中、勉学に集中できます。実際、私が訪れた時も、高校生や大学生、もっと年齢層の高い方々まで様々な人々が図書館を利用していました。

ちなみに、ブリティッシュ・カウンシルの留学のページにあるコンパスをもった人の像はここ、大英図書館にあります。

Kings Cross Station

This time, I report on the King's Cross station which is the gateway to the north part of England from London. The station is next to St Pancras station.

Above is the station building of Kings Cross. Speaking of King's Cross station, the station is famous for its entrance to the line of 9 and 3/4 of the Harry Potter series. Unfortunately, I did not know where where is the line of 9 and 3/4. 


Now, when I entered into the Kings Cross Station ...

As St Pancras station, making it a very modern style. Purple light purple has been issued against the ceiling, is very beautiful.

キングス・クロス駅

今回は、ロンドンからイギリス北部への玄関口であるキングス・クロス駅についてご報告します。キングス・クロス駅はセント・パンクラス駅の北側に位置しています。

上は、キングス・クロスの駅舎です。キングス・クロス駅といえば、ハリー・ポッターの９と３／４番線への入り口があることで有名な駅です。残念ながら、私はその９と３／４番線がどこにあるのか、わかりませんでした…。

さて、このキングス・クロス駅の中に入ってみると…、

セント・パンクラス駅のように、とても現代的な様式になっています。天井に紫色のライトが照らし出されており、とてもきれいです。

St Pancras International Station

          I will write the memories of many parts of London I visited in the spring of 2012. First round, the topic is St Pancras International Station.

##International Station##

          I think in Japan the international station is unfamiliar. Because Japan is an island nation, it is a little unlikely that the train across the sea. Here, you may wonder at the international station in England. You may think that England is also an island nation. Yes indeed. England is distant from continent (like France) by the Straits of Dover. However, by digging a tunnel under the Strait of Dover, and now the train go through the tunnel. Arrival and departure of the train station in England is today's post, St Pancras International station.

##The Harmony Old Architecture with New Architecture##

          This, St Pancras station, opened in 1868. In that time in Japan, the Meiji Restoration was occurred. Viewing from the street, the station building made of brick is preeminent in the atmosphere. When I visited here for the first time, the building is too beautiful to know it is a station.

          Actually, this station has been used as a hotel ( Hotel St Pancras St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel ). A part of the ground floor is used as a restaurant.

          You can go through the place which is arch-shaped gate just in the photograph (Fig. 1) and get to the plat-form. In contrast to the station building, the platform's architectural style is steel building. I saw such a culture of Britain in this place, on the one hand, they preserve the good old things, on the other hand, they adopt a new one in harmony. 


          Come to think of it, I remind Tokyo Station, Japan. The original style station building is under re-construction, and the station building will be opened this autumn  ( Tokyo Station City ). Tokyo Station is similar to St Pancras. The rebuilt station building will be harmonized with contemporary station building. Both Stations are terminal station that many people are gathered from various places; Tokyo station is a nodal point of the Shinkansen super express and many local lines. And more, the rebuilt station building will be used as a hotel is like St Pancras.

Well, the photo is the plat-form of St Pancras station. Ahead of the London Olympics, it took the Olympics' symbol. Although I visited there in the last spring, I was able to feel the atmosphere of the Olympic Games as early as Year.

##EUROSTAR##

          Earlier, I wrote St Pancras Station is International Station. High-speed trains arrive at and depart from St Pancras, the trains are EUROSTARs.

Even when I visited St Pancros, between the cities of the continent of Europe, like Paris, France and Brussels, Belgium, EUROSTAR had bought hurriedly to go. Photograph below is electronic bulletin board of St Pancras station. The board tell you arriving trains from Paris and Brussels.

Different people come and go at St Pancras station. I was filled with excitement. I had a glimpse of a reason that London has been still in the status as one of the world's financial center.


          Next time, I will try to report neighbor of St Pancras, Kings Cross station.

セント・パンクラス駅

2012年の春に訪れたロンドンの各地の思い出をつづっていきたいと思います。第１回目は、国際駅セント・パンクラス駅です。

【国際駅】

日本では国際駅というのはなじみのないものだと思います。島国である日本では、海を渡る列車というのはちょっと考えにくいです。ここで、??と思う方もあるかもしれません。イギリスも島国では？、と。たしかにそうです。イギリスはドーバー海峡によって大陸（フランス）と隔たっています。ところが、このドーバー海峡の下にトンネルを掘って、そこを現在では列車が通っているわけです。その列車のイギリスの発着駅が今日の記事である、セント・パンクラス駅です。

【新旧建築の融合】

　この、セント・パンクラス駅、開業は1868年、ちょうど日本では明治維新の年だと思います。通りから眺める駅舎はレンガ造りで雰囲気バツグンです。はじめて訪れたときは、まさかここが駅だとは分かりませんでした…。

　実は、この駅舎、ホテルとして使われています（セント・パンクラスホテル St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel）。一階部分はレストランが入っていました。

ちょうど写真でアーチ状の門になっているところをくぐると駅に行けます。駅舎とは対照的に、プラットホームは鉄骨造りの建築様式になっています。この、ギャップというか、旧きよきものを保存しながら、新しいものを取り入れるところに英国の文化をみたような思いがしました。

そういえば、日本の東京駅も開業当初の駅舎を再建しているさなかでなかったかと思います（ Tokyo Station City）。新幹線や在来線の結節点である東京駅に、旧い駅舎を復活させて調和させるところは、このセント・パンクラス駅と似ていますね。（ちなみに、再建した駅舎はホテルとして使われるようです。こんなところまでそっくり。）

さて、写真はセント・パンクラス駅のホームです。ロンドンオリンピックを控えてか、五輪がかかっていました。訪れたのは春ですが、早くもオリンピック・イヤーの雰囲気を感じることができました。

【ユーロスター】

さきほど、セント・パンクラス駅 St. Pancras International Station駅は国際駅であると書きました。このセント・パンクラス駅から発着する列車に高速列車ユーロスター　EUROSTARがあります。

私が訪れたときも、フランスのパリ、ベルギーのブリュッセルなど、ヨーロッパ大陸側の都市との間で、ユーロスターが慌ただしく行きかっていました。四枚目の写真は、セント・パンクラス駅の電光掲示板です。パリやブリュッセルから到着する列車を伝えてくれています。

さまざまな人々が行き交う、セント・パンクロス駅は、熱気に満ちていました。ロンドンが依然世界の金融センターの一つとしての地位にあるその理由の一旦を垣間みた思いがしました。

次回はセント・パンクラス駅のお隣、キングス・クロス駅をご報告しようと思います。
